How to Get to Butterfly Valley

Where is Butterfly Valley?

Butterfly Valley is a narrow gorge opening onto the sea south of Ölüdeniz, at the foot of Babadağ. There's no road into the valley; you arrive either by boat or down a steep path from the village of Faralya.

It takes its name from the butterfly species seen in the valley in summer. Accommodation in the protected area is limited, so most visitors come for the day.

Going by boat

The boat is the easiest way: boats from Ölüdeniz beach reach the bay in front of the valley in about 25 minutes. Ölüdeniz day boat trips also stop here, leaving time for a swim and the waterfall walk.

The advantage of a tour is that you also see other stops such as the Blue Cave on the same day; hotel pickup is available if you want it (optional transfer).

Walking down the path

The path from Faralya down to the valley is very steep and rocky; in places you hold on to ropes. We don't recommend it unless you're experienced, or with children, or in the heat of the day.

The waterfall walk

From the bay, a walk of about 20 minutes into the valley brings you to a small waterfall. The path is stony, so wear non-slip shoes rather than flip-flops. By late summer the waterfall may have less water.

Best time and season

June to September is when the sea is warmest and calmest. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds; the bay can get busy in the afternoon.

What to bring

Swimwear and a towel, non-slip water shoes, sunscreen, a hat and water. There's a small café at the bay, but the choice is limited.
