Best Time for a Fethiye Jeep Safari: Month by Month
Prime Turist local team · Updated: October 2026 · 13 min read
A jeep safari is a guided adventure tour in four-wheel-drive vehicles through the mountainous countryside around Fethiye. You visit Saklıkent Gorge, the ancient city of Tlos and the surrounding villages on an exciting ride through beautiful scenery. It's about more than sightseeing: there's a mud bath, a water fight, a taste of ancient civilisations and a chance to meet the local culture.

What Is the Fethiye Jeep Safari and Why Is It So Popular?
Fethiye's popularity comes from its place as one of Muğla's main holiday centres and from the area's remarkable landscape. Unlike a classic beach holiday, a jeep safari combines adrenaline with a love of nature. The route heads inland into the Seydikemer area, along narrow mountain roads to cool gorge water and historic sites. It's an active day but not a gruelling one: Prime Turist's jeep safari is rated easy, and along the way you get to know Muğla's rich cultural heritage.
Tip: Most jeep safaris are full-day tours that start early in the morning and finish in the early evening. On Prime Turist's tour, lunch and the water fight are included, so pack comfortable clothes and a waterproof bag.
Best Time for a Fethiye Safari: The April–October Season
The best time for a Fethiye safari is broadly from April to October. This seven-month window offers good weather and a steady flow of visitors. Prime Turist's jeep safari runs only during this period, every day from 1 April to 31 October; there's no jeep safari in winter (November–March). If you're visiting in winter, the ATV quad safari runs all year round. In summer (June–August), the heat and the crowds can be an issue. Every season has its own pros and cons, though.
April and May: spring adventure
Spring is when ideal safari conditions begin. In April and May daytime temperatures are roughly 20–28°C, comfortable for being active outdoors. The rain is tailing off and the countryside is still green and fresh. The river through Saklıkent Gorge is fuller and colder in spring, so how far you can walk into the gorge depends on the water level on the day.
Crowds stay moderate: visitor numbers pick up in April as the holiday season begins, but it's still calmer than high summer. This is also a great time for photography, with softer light. The walking and exploring call for an average level of fitness, so older visitors and children can enjoy the tour too.
In short: April and May are the most balanced time for a Fethiye safari: mild weather, green countryside, reasonable crowds and great photos all come together.
June–August: the summer peak
Summer is peak season. In June, July and August daytime temperatures are often around 30°C or higher, which can be tough for long hours in the mountains. The water level in Saklıkent Gorge drops, as there's little rain. But the icy gorge water is a welcome relief from the heat.
The biggest issue on summer tours is the crowds. Summer is the height of international tourism, and many of the visitors who come to Fethiye choose a safari. The popular stops get busy and there's less peace and quiet. The heat also makes the day more demanding, and it can be tiring for older people and young children.
For photography, the summer sun is very high, so shadows are hard and contrast is strong. Unless you're a professional photographer, this can take the edge off your pictures.
September and October: autumn advantages
September and October are something of a hidden gem for a Fethiye safari. It's warm without the extremes of summer, much like the mild conditions of spring. With the summer holidays over, visitor numbers fall noticeably. Early September is still hot, but from the second half of the month things calm down. October is the quietest and most relaxed month for a tour.
There's still enough water in Saklıkent Gorge, and the mud bath and water fight go ahead as usual. The countryside freshens up after the summer heat, and the light for photography is just as good as in spring.
In September and October the tour calls for an average level of fitness, so older visitors and children can join comfortably. The stops are often quieter, which leaves more time to chat with your guide and ask questions.
Note: Towards the end of October the weather starts to change and the chance of rain goes up. Prime Turist's jeep safari season ends on 31 October. If a tour has to be cancelled because of the weather, you can choose a new date or get a full refund.
Weather and Temperatures: What Changes Through the Season?
Fethiye has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. During the April–October safari season the weather is generally good, but there are clear differences from month to month.
As a rough guide, daytime temperatures are around 20°C in April, 25°C in May and the high 20s in June, 32–35°C in July and August, then around 30°C in September and 25°C in October. These are midday values; mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler, and it's windier and cooler up in the mountains.
As for rain, April can still bring showers that may affect tours, May is drier, and June to August are almost completely dry. A little rain returns in September, and October is the month in the season when rain is most likely.
Summer can feel humid, which makes the heat feel stronger, while spring and autumn are usually more comfortable.
How Long Is a Fethiye Safari? Planning Your Day
A jeep safari is a full-day tour, so set aside the whole day. On Prime Turist's jeep safari you're picked up from your hotel at around 08:30 and dropped back between 18:00 and 19:00.
On Prime Turist's tour the day includes off-road mountain tracks with a water fight, the ancient city of Tlos, a walk in the icy water of Saklıkent Gorge, a cooling-off stop at Gizlikent Waterfall, a break by the stream at Yakapark and a mud bath with showers, plus lunch. The order of the stops can change from day to day.
If you'd rather not spend a whole day, the ATV quad safari is a shorter option: about 4 hours, with morning, midday and late-afternoon sessions, and it runs all year round. The full-day jeep safari, though, also covers Tlos and the area's other highlights, so it gives you a fuller picture.
The jeep safari is rated easy. You spend a fair amount of time sitting in the jeep, and getting in and out and walking are concentrated at certain stops. There are plenty of breaks for older people and children to rest.
Saklıkent Gorge and Tlos: Route Details
Saklıkent Gorge is one of Fethiye's most famous natural sights. Rock walls rising to around 300 metres, a narrow passage and crystal-clear water make it unforgettable. How far you walk into the gorge is up to you and the water level; the rocks are slippery, so take it slowly.
The mud bath is one of the most popular moments of the safari. On Prime Turist's tour it's a separate stop on the route: you cover yourself in mud, let it dry a little and then rinse off under the showers. It's fun more than anything else, and it makes for great photos.
Tlos showcases Fethiye's rich history. This ancient Lycian city sits on a high hill, and here you can see rock tombs, the theatre, Roman baths and the acropolis with its later fortress. Exploring the site involves some walking on uneven ground and steps.
Prime Turist's jeep safari picks you up from hotels in Fethiye centre, Çalış, Ovacık, Hisarönü and Ölüdeniz, then heads inland through local villages to Tlos, Saklıkent Gorge, Gizlikent Waterfall, Yakapark and the mud bath, before bringing you back to your hotel. At each stop your guide shares the history and geography of the area.
Fethiye Safari Prep Guide: Kit and Clothing
Preparing before the tour makes a big difference to the day. The right clothes and kit keep you comfortable and safe.
The right clothes and shoes
Choose comfortable, relaxed clothes. Shorts or sports shorts, a thin T-shirt and shoes you don't mind getting wet are ideal. You'll spend a fair amount of time sitting in the jeep, so go for stretchy fabrics that let you move freely. Remember there's a water fight, so bring a swimsuit, a towel and spare clothes.
A hat is essential for sun protection: the sun can be fierce in the mountains, and the risk of sunburn goes up. Shoes matter a lot; trainers or water shoes with a good grip are a better choice than flat, smooth-soled shoes. As you'll be wading through the gorge water, pack a waterproof bag and extra clothes.
Wear old clothes for the mud bath, as mud can leave permanent stains on some fabrics. You'll also sweat during the day, so a breathable material is a good choice.
Essential kit and accessories
A waterproof bag is a must to protect your phone and valuables. Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), lip balm and insect repellent are useful in the mountains. A camera or action camera is great for capturing memories, but use a waterproof case.
Drinks aren't included on Prime Turist's jeep safari, so bring enough water. Energy bars, chocolate or fruit help if your energy dips during the day. A small first-aid kit isn't essential but is handy for minor scrapes. Also bring some cash for the entrance fees (Saklıkent, Tlos, Yakapark and Gizlikent), which are paid on site.
In the jeep, follow the driver's and guide's instructions: stay seated while the vehicle is moving and hold on over rough sections. A hat to protect your head from the sun is important too.
Tip: It's a good idea to take your glasses off for the mud bath, as the mud can smear them. If you wear contact lenses, bring a pair of glasses as a back-up.
The Mud Bath and the Water Fight: What You Do on the Safari
The mud bath is one of the moments people look forward to most on the safari. On Prime Turist's tour it's a separate stop on the route, with showers to rinse off. Smearing yourself with the slippery mud is great fun, and you come out feeling refreshed.
It's simple: you step into the mud, cover yourself, wait a few minutes for it to dry a little and then rinse off under the shower. The water may feel cold at first, but once the mud is off you feel fresh and cool. It's a fun, relaxing break in the day.
The water fight is another favourite. It happens along the off-road tracks, with the jeeps splashing each other as they go. It's all about fun and adrenaline, and children and teenagers usually love it most. If you'd rather stay out of it, let your guide know, though on an open jeep a few splashes are hard to avoid.
Visiting the ancient city of Tlos is another important part of the day. You can see rock tombs, the theatre and the remains of the baths and the acropolis. Your guide shares the history, and there are plenty of photo opportunities. Tlos works like an open-air museum of Lycian architecture and way of life.
Lunch is included in the tour price. It's a good chance to rest and chat with the others in your group.
Crowds: Which Months Are Quieter?
Crowd levels have a direct effect on the experience. When it's quieter, there's more time to chat with your guide, ask questions and take photos.
In April, as the season gets going, the popular stops are fairly calm. May gets a little busier, and in June, July and August the crowds reach their peak. At Saklıkent and other popular stops this can mean more people around you and longer waits.
In September, with the summer holidays over, crowds start to thin out, and October is usually the quietest month of the season. This is when you'll get the most time with your guide and the most personal attention.
Crowds can also vary from day to day, even within the same month.
Month · Daytime temperature · Crowds · Chance of rain · Photo conditions
April · around 20°C · Moderate · Moderate · Good
May · around 25°C · Moderate · Low · Good
June · high 20s °C · High · Very low · Fair
July · 32–35°C · Very high · Very low · Fair
August · 32–35°C · Very high · Very low · Fair
September · around 30°C · Moderate · Low · Good
October · around 25°C · Low · Moderate · Good
Choosing the best time for a Fethiye safari depends on your preferences and expectations. If you want a calm experience, October is ideal.
