Quick answer

On a 5-day budget itinerary in Fethiye, you explore the town centre on foot on day one, take the 12 Islands boat trip on day two, go to Ölüdeniz on day three and to Saklıkent and Tlos on day four; day five is for paragliding, a jeep safari or Kayaköy. You don't need to hire a car: you reach nearby places by dolmuş (shared minibus) and cover the far-flung spots on tours with hotel pick-up.

Fethiye in 5 Days on a Budget: A Day-by-Day Plan

The itinerary at a glance

The plan assumes you're staying in central Fethiye or in Çalış. Each day is given to one area, so you never travel the same road twice or waste money and time getting around.

• Day 1: Fethiye town centre, Paspatur, the ancient theatre and the Amyntas Rock Tombs (on foot)

• Day 2: 12 Islands boat trip (lunch on board included)

• Day 3: Ölüdeniz, the Blue Lagoon and Belcekız beach (by dolmuş)

• Day 4: Tlos, Yakapark and Saklıkent Gorge (on a tour)

• Day 5: Paragliding, a jeep safari or Kayaköy, and some rest

Day 1: Explore central Fethiye on foot

Spend the first day on foot; you don't need transport in the centre. Start at the harbour in the morning, walk past the ancient theatre and into the old bazaar in Paspatur. Wandering the bazaar is free, and an hour is plenty to browse the shops and cafés in its stone buildings at a relaxed pace.

In the afternoon, once the heat eases, head up to the Amyntas Rock Tombs. You reach them via an 8–10 minute uphill walk from the centre followed by stone steps; there's an entry fee. The view over the bay is at its best in the late afternoon.

For dinner, the fish market is a good choice: you buy fish by the kilo at the counter and the surrounding restaurants cook it for a per-person charge. Ask about this charge and what's included before you buy the fish.

Day 2: 12 Islands boat trip

Visiting Fethiye's bays one by one on your own is both expensive and tiring. The 12 Islands Boat Trip from Fethiye makes 4–5 swim stops among the islands in the bay, and serves lunch on board. You can make your own way to the boat in Fethiye harbour or add hotel pick-up for an extra charge per person. With lunch included, the day's food is covered by the tour price.

Butterfly Valley isn't on this trip's route; if you want to see the valley, choose the boat trip that departs from Ölüdeniz. We compare the two trips in our 12 Islands or Butterfly Valley article.

Day 3: Ölüdeniz and the Blue Lagoon

Ölüdeniz is about 12–14 km from central Fethiye. Frequent dolmuşes from the centre run via Ovacık and Hisarönü and get you there in about half an hour; this is the cheapest way to go.

Belcekız beach is open to everyone and free. The Blue Lagoon right next to it is protected as a nature park and has an entry fee; its water is shallow and calm, which makes it easy going for families with children. In summer go early in the morning, as both beaches get busy towards midday.

If you'd like to see it from the sea, the Ölüdeniz Boat Trip leaves the jetty at 10:00 or 10:30 and calls at the Blue Cave, Butterfly Valley and St. Nicholas (Gemiler) Island. There's more on getting there and the beaches in our Ölüdeniz guide.

Day 4: Tlos, Yakapark and Saklıkent

Saklıkent Gorge and the ancient city of Tlos are a long way from the centre, and combining the two in one day by dolmuş is difficult. The Saklıkent Gorge Tour from Fethiye picks you up from your hotel, stops at Tlos first, serves lunch at Yakapark and ends the day in the cool water of the gorge.

Entry to Tlos and the gorge isn't included in the tour price; you pay on site. If you're visiting several archaeological sites, a MüzeKart may come in handy; we explain where it's accepted in our article on MüzeKart in Fethiye. You'll be walking in the water in the gorge, so bring non-slip water shoes.

Day 5: Adventure or a rest

The last day is up to you. If you want an adrenaline rush, Ölüdeniz Paragliding lets you glide from Babadağ over the lagoon; no experience is needed, and flights run all year round when the weather allows.

If heights aren't your thing, the Fethiye Jeep Safari is a fun day on dirt tracks with a water fight, and hotel pick-up is included.

For a quieter day, go to Kayaköy. This village of abandoned stone houses is about 8–10 km from central Fethiye; you get there yourself by car, taxi or dolmuş. For its history, see our Kayaköy article. Or do nothing at all: watching the sunset in Çalış is part of this plan too.

Small decisions that protect your budget

• Stay in the centre or in Çalış: you'll be close to the dolmuş routes and can walk back in the evenings.

• Take the dolmuş to nearby places: there are frequent services to Ölüdeniz, Hisarönü, Ovacık and Çalış. For routes and stops, see our guide to getting around Fethiye.

• Combine the far-flung spots with tours whose price includes hotel pick-up (Saklıkent, jeep safari): no taxi fares or parking costs.

• Book tours in advance: in summer the popular days fill up early, and plans left until the last day fall apart.

• Carry water, a hat and sunscreen: buying them later on the beach or on the boat costs more.

Which month should you go?

Boat trips run between April and October; the best time for the whole itinerary is May–June and September–October. In these months the sea is good for swimming, the weather is cooler and there are fewer crowds. July and August are the hottest and busiest months.

From November to March there are no boat trips; you can swap days two and three for paragliding, a jeep safari or one of our winter tours. For month-by-month weather and sea temperatures, see our Fethiye weather by month guide.

Frequently asked questions

Are 5 days enough for Fethiye? Yes. In five days you can see the town centre, the 12 Islands, Ölüdeniz and Saklıkent and still keep a day for adventure or rest. If you only have three days, choose the centre, a boat trip and Ölüdeniz.

Do I need to hire a car in Fethiye? Not for this plan. You reach nearby places by dolmuş; gorge and safari tours pick you up from and drop you back at your hotel, while on boat trips hotel pick-up costs extra. A car is useful for places tours don't go, such as Kayaköy or remote bays.

Which trip goes to Butterfly Valley? Butterfly Valley is on the route of the boat trip that departs from Ölüdeniz; the 12 Islands trip from Fethiye doesn't stop at the valley.

Can I do this itinerary in winter? There are no boat trips between November and March. The town centre, Ölüdeniz and paragliding are all possible in winter too; you can replace the boat days with winter tours.
