Fethiye Weather by Month: Air and Sea Temperatures

Fethiye's climate in brief

Fethiye has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. It gets about 843 mm of rain a year, roughly four fifths of it between November and March. From June to September there are only one or two rainy days a month, and the town enjoys around 2,900 hours of sunshine a year.

The figures in this guide are long-term averages. Air temperatures and rainfall come from the World Meteorological Organization's 1991–2020 climate normals for Fethiye; sea temperatures are the average of the last 10 years, based on satellite measurements. The daytime figure is the average daily high and the night figure the average daily low. Individual days can be a few degrees off, so check the forecast for your dates before you travel.

Spring: March, April, May

March: 20 °C by day, 8 °C at night, sea 17 °C. Expect 6–7 rainy days. The countryside is green and in flower, which makes it a lovely month for walking, but for most people the sea is still too cold.

April: 23 °C by day, 11 °C at night, sea 18 °C. Rainy days drop to 5–6 a month. Boat trips, the jeep safari and day excursions start in April. A quick swim is possible on a sunny afternoon, but the water is fresh, so bring a jumper or windbreaker on the boat.

May: 27 °C by day, 15 °C at night, sea 20 °C. There are only 3–4 rainy days and close to 10 hours of sunshine a day. It is one of the nicest months to see Fethiye before the summer crowds arrive, and the sea warms up noticeably towards the end of the month.

In spring there is a difference of about 12 degrees between day and night. Pack a light jacket or sweater for early-morning tours and evenings out.

Summer: June, July, August

June: 32 °C by day, 20 °C at night, sea 24 °C. It hardly ever rains and the days last 14.5 hours. The sea is perfect for swimming and the hottest weeks are still to come, which is why many people find June the most comfortable summer month.

July: 35 °C by day, 22 °C at night, sea 27 °C. The sunniest month of the year, with 12 hours of sunshine a day. The best way to beat the midday heat is to stay close to water: an Ölüdeniz boat trip or the ice-cold river at Saklıkent Gorge are July favourites.

August: 35 °C by day, 23 °C at night, sea 28 °C. The sea reaches its warmest. It is also Fethiye's busiest month, so we recommend booking your tours and your airport transfer in advance.

In summer the UV index reaches 10–11, which is very high. Stay in the shade between 12:00 and 16:00, use SPF 50 sun cream and a hat, and drink plenty of water. Light reflected off the sea makes the sun even stronger, so reapply sun cream on the boat too.

Autumn: September, October, November

September: 32 °C by day, 19 °C at night, sea 27 °C. The sea is still at summer temperature and there are only two rainy days in the month. Crowds thin out once the schools go back, making it the best month if you want a warm sea and a quieter Fethiye.

October: 27 °C by day, 15 °C at night, sea 24 °C. Expect around 4 rainy days. The sea is 4 degrees warmer than in May, so swimming in October is still a pleasure. Boat trips and day excursions run until the end of October.

November: 22 °C by day, 10 °C at night, sea 21 °C. Rainy days rise to 6, but dry days are still the majority. The air cools but the sea stays around 21 °C, and some people still swim on sunny afternoons. Boat trips finish for the season, while paragliding and the winter tours carry on.

Winter: December, January, February

December: 18 °C by day, 7 °C at night, sea 19 °C. Around 10 rainy days; a fifth of the year's rain falls in this month alone. Days are short, with about 4 hours of sunshine.

January: 16 °C by day, 6 °C at night, sea 18 °C. Expect 10–11 rainy days; it is the coolest month of the year. Snow and frost are very rare on the coast, and on dry days the middle of the day is pleasant for walking around in a light jacket.

February: 17 °C by day, 7 °C at night, sea 17 °C. The rain starts to ease off, with 8–9 rainy days. The sea is at its coolest in February and March.

Winter in Fethiye is quiet: some hotels close and the streets are calm. On clear days paragliding flights over Ölüdeniz continue; on rainy or windy days flights are postponed. You'll find the up-to-date list of tours running in winter on our winter tours page.

The best months for swimming

From June to October the sea averages 24 °C or more. For most people the swimming season runs from early June to the end of October; those used to cooler water also swim in May and November.

The warmest sea is in July, August and September (27–28 °C). September has the advantage of a sea as warm as summer with quieter beaches. The Ölüdeniz lagoon is shallow and sheltered, so on calm days it is also easy for families with small children.

Which tours in which month?

Boat trips run every day from early April to the end of October. The sea is at its best from June to September; in April, May and October the bays are quieter and the water cooler. Read more in our guide to the best time for an Ölüdeniz boat trip.

The jeep safari, rafting and day excursions also run from April to October. On long trips such as Pamukkale or Kaş, the July–August heat can be tiring, so spring or autumn is a good time for them. We explain which months suit a safari best in our guide to the best time for a jeep safari.

Paragliding runs all year round; what decides a flight is wind and visibility, not the season. In winter, flying days depend on the weather. Our guide to the best weather for paragliding explains which conditions are right.

From November to March there are no boat trips and most day excursions stop, while paragliding, the quad (ATV) safari and horse riding continue through the winter.

For a warm sea and a quieter Fethiye: June and September. These are the best-balanced months for a beach holiday.

For walking and sightseeing: April, May, October and November. The weather is mild and the countryside green; we cover the best time to walk the Lycian Way in a separate guide.

For a quiet winter break: December to March. The sea is cool and some days are rainy, but you get Fethiye without the crowds and, on clear days, a flight over Ölüdeniz.
